A synthetic diamond (also called laboratory-grown, laboratory-created, artificial, artisan created, or cultured diamond) is a diamond that is produced in a controlled technological process (in contrast to naturally formed diamond, which is created through geological processes and obtained by mining). Unlike diamond simulants (imitations of diamonds made of superficially-similar non-diamond materials), synthetic diamonds are composed of the same material as naturally formed diamonds – pure carbon crystallized in anisotropic 3D form – and share identical chemical and physical properties.
While colourless diamonds are most commonly recognized in an engagement ring, black or white diamonds have grown popular.
Naturally, black diamonds were considered “Fancy Blacks” and are now held in low regard. Only a handful of black diamonds are known, including the 67.50ct Black Orlov, also known as The Eye of Brahman.
Black diamonds were considered an outcast until the 20th century, when jewellers recognized their potential to add dramatic flair to jewellery. Because of their mysterious, dark colour, black diamonds quickly became fashionable additions to jewellery.
Numerous claims of diamond synthesis were reported between 1879 and 1928; most of these attempts were carefully analyzed, but none were confirmed.
Black diamond engagement rings became more popular as black diamonds gained popularity. This was due to celebrity and film exposure. Black diamond engagement rings were featured in the 2010 film Sex in the City and were often displayed by celebrities like Carmen Electra or Kat VonD.
